Born in Africa, of Goan origin, Antonio E Costa trained and worked with Canadian architect Henry Migallo at Town and Country planning office, Nairobi, prior to being offered the opportunity to live and work in Canada in recognition of his natural skills in urban design applications.
E Costa obtained a BFA degree at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and an MES in Environmental Studies Program at York University, Toronto, besides design in woodworking at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto.
E Costa has several languages to his credit, and his work reflects the varied geographical landscapes of the many countries he has lived and painted in. He has participated in art workshops in Southern Africa, Angola, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Mexico, Cuba, India, Brazil, Canada and the USA.
E Costa's abstract approaches to painting and design were significantly marked by participating in the creation of a futuristic city, "Arcosanti", in Arizona, under the supervision of the visionary architect Paolo Soleri, as well as sharing city design concepts with a collective, P.A.R.D. associates, in Alberta, Canada.
Awards and grants include Alliance Francaise, Pondicherry, India (1999), Canadian High Commission, Zimbabwe (1989,1990), Delfina Studio Trust, Art Residency, Spain (1996), Canada Council Grant (1984), Kenya Society of Arts and Crafts (1966).
His most recent solo shows include Gallery Sumukha, Bangalore (1997), Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore (1999), The Fine Art Company, Mumbai (1999, 2000), Fundacao Oriente, Goa (2003), La Parete Gallery, Toronto, Canada (2004), Jamaat Art Gallery, Mumbai (2004).
E Costa's works are in public, private and corporate collections all over the world, including state collections in Africa, Canada and India.
He presently lives and works in Goa, India.
